Can I use Gait Up in clinical studies?

Yes, Gait Up is used in several clinical studies. Ethics Committees have always accepted Gait Up’s equipment for research. We can provide you with sample text and images to include into your study documentation. If it can be of any help, please contact us to get this document. We also have extensive experience in the design of clinical studies related to wearable motion sensors, and can provide support services on a contractual basis.


Can I use Gait Up systems for a research protocol?

Sure, many customers worldwide use Gait Up systems for research. Until today, we heard of no project which was rejected by the ethical committee. We invite you to use the grants submission document where we provide pictures and text to copy/paste in your funding requests. If you need CE or ISO certificates or any testing report, please contact us.


Will I receive training to get familiar with my systems?

Gait Up does not generally provide on-site training to the users. We however provide online material to get to know your system via tutorial videos, user manuals and quick start guides. In case you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact our support team ([email protected]).

Can the sensor measure any movement?

Yes, the Physilog® sensor can measure any movement by recording 3D accelerations, 3D rotations, barometric pressure and 3D magnetic field (not included in Physilog5). If you wish to obtain processed parameters, you need to select a relevant software which will analyse the raw data and translate them into meaningful, color-coded information. Gait Up provides ready-made analysis software for walking and running analysis. Please contact us for custom solutions.


Is there a software that analyses all activities?

The Research ToolKit software displays raw data of any movement. However, a software that turns raw data into meaningful, color-coded information is specific to the activity to be measured. Currently Gait Up provides software for walking and running analysis.


Where can I find the latest version of Gait Up software / applications?

For mobile applications you can find the latest version on the corresponding app store (e.g. Apple Store or Google Play Store).

For desktop softwares, the latest available version is indicated on the support page, the updater software allows in addition to check for new versions and to know if your license still allows you to benefit from the updates.

Is it possible to test, or receive a demo of Gait Up’s products ?

The best way to experience Gait Up’s products hands on is by visiting our booth at one of the many conferences we attend each year. We can also organize a Skype to show you our products and speak with you about your use case. For customs and tracking reasons, it is not easy to loan some products for testing. Therefore, we do not loan any product.


How long does it take to receive my systems?

You will receive a tracking number to follow your parcel, usually within 5 business days of placing your order. Shipment duration depends mainly on customs clearance, which is usually fast. We successfully delivered to 38 countries worldwide.


Do you have local distributors in my country?

How long is the warranty, and what does it cover?

Gait Up includes a 1 year warranty on all of its products, including support for troubleshooting and sensor replacement in case of manufacturing deficiency. See Gait Up sales terms & conditions for further details.

How long does it take to install the Physilog device on the subject?

The sensors are delivered with a fixation clip which can be used to attach the sensor to the subject. Each sensor is independently fixed to the subject. For a gait analysis, two sensors are attached to the feet which takes less than 30 seconds.


Is any functional calibration required before a test?

Depending on the protocol, a functional calibration may be needed. For gait analysis, our software automatically takes care of this step for you and the only requirement is that the subject stands still for a short moment at the beginning of the recording.


Barefoot or only with shoes?

The gait analysis software can analyse measurements recorded barefoot and with shoes on. To fix sensors on barefoot we recommend to use elastic straps with velcro cover or cohesive tape.


Can we use a single sensor for gait analysis?

Yes, it is possible to use a single sensor for gait analysis. However some parameters such as double support time in walking or flight time in running cannot be computed in this configuration. 

Hint: set the radio configuration to “No Radio” to benefit from prolonged battery life when using one sensor only.


How often are there firmware/software updates?

Gait Up continuously innovates and improves its products. We plan 2-3 updates per year per product for research.


Do I need to calibrate my sensors yearly, or send them for re-calibration?

Sensors are calibrated at Gait Up before shipping to you to correct offset and bias of the accelerometer and gyroscope. As long as the sensors do not receive shocks or violent temperature changes, we do not recommend recalibrating the sensors for gait analysis. Depending on your use of the sensors, regular recalibration can be necessary.


Do I have access to the raw data of my measurements ?

Yes, you always have the possibility to access the raw data of a recording from the internal memory of the Physilog5 sensor. The only exception is when you use the “Physilog Visualize” function to stream raw data to the Android application, in this case no data is saved inside the sensor or the application.


I can’t find the measurement files on the Physilog5 memory, where are they saved?

Files are saved in folders depending on creation date, named in the format YY_MM_DD. If the internal time of the Physilog5 was not correct, the files were saved in a folder called ‘NO_DATE’.

How can I update the firmware of my Physilog5?

To update the firmware of the Physilog5, a smartphone or tablet/ipad is needed. You need to install an application called nrfConnect (nrfToolbox on iOS). Download the latest firmware version file to your device and follow the instructions given in the user manual for Physilog5 (sect. 5.4, p.9).


Can Physilog5 be remotely started and stopped?

Yes, the Physilog5 can be started from a mobile device. The Sample App gives access to a function called “Remote control” which allows to start and stop the Physilog5 sensors from the application. The compatibility of the Sample App depends on the firmware version installed on your Physilog5, if you have trouble connecting to the sensor please contact our support team.

Yes, you always have the possibility to access the raw data of a recording from the internal memory of the Physilog5 sensor.


What sensor configuration should I use for gait measurements?

For complete gait measurements, two sensors are used, one fixed on each foot. For running analysis, the sampling frequency of the accelerometer and gyroscope must be set to 256Hz. The range of the accelerometer should be set to +/-16g and the gyroscope range should be +/-2000°/s. The barometer should be activated and record data at 64Hz. 

The same sensor configuration can be used for walking analysis. In order to minimize file size and increase battery life, walking measurements can also be recorded at 128Hz for accelerometer and gyroscope sampling frequency and the barometer inactivated.


How can I update the gait analysis software on my USB key?

The Gait Up Lab software is delivered on a USB key. In order to update the software, download the “Gait Up updater software” from the support website. Launch the “Gait Up updater software”, connect your USB key with the Gait Up Lab software and click on update.


How should the sensors be attached for gait measurement?

Physilog5 are attached to the feet for walking and running measurements. Use the fixation clip delivered with the system to attach the sensor in the shoe laces or on the outside of the shoerim. The measurement can also be done barefoot, for this attach the elastic straps around the feet and fix the Physilog5 using a sticky velcro or by fixing the clip to the elastic strap.


What gait tests can be measured with the gait analysis system?

The Gait Up Lab software can analyse recordings from any walk performed on flat surfaces. This includes 20m walk test, 6min walk test or figure of eight test, outside walking and many more. For running analysis, the software can interpret runs on the treadmill or outside with flat surfaces.


How can I install the GaitUp application?

The Gait Up Live application can be installed directly from the Play Store for Android devices or from App Store for iPhones and iPads.


How can I obtain a login for the GaitUp application?

For complete gait measurements, two sensors are used, one fixed on each foot. For running analysis, the sampling frequency of the accelerometer and gyroscope must be set to 256Hz. On which devices can the Gait Up Live application be used ?

The Gait Up Live application can be installed on Android and iOS devices. The application is adapted for phone and tablet screen sizes, however we cannot guarantee that the design will look exactly the same as in the user manual on all devices. The device must have Bluetooth low Energy (BLE) capabilities and for Android the version must be Android 5 or higher.

The Gait Up Live application can analyse short recordings from any walk performed on flat surfaces. This includes 20m walk test, 2min walk test or figure of eight test, outside walking and many more. For running analysis, the system can interpret runs on the treadmill or outside with flat surfaces. The mobile device with the Gait Up Live application should stay in proximity to the subject during the entire recording to be able to receive the data from the sensor. It is recommended to limit recordings with the Gait Up Live system to a few minutes.


What sensor configuration should I use for gait measurements?

Using the Gait Up Live application, you don’t need to think about the sensor configuration, the application automatically sets the recording parameters of the Physilog5 when you select either walking or running analysis.


The recording files of two sensors are not synchronized.

For recordings started with the Physilog button, the configuration of the sensors need to be correctly set if the files shall be synchronized. Use the Research Toolkit Desktop software to control and change the sensor configuration. For a set of sensors to synchronize, one must be defined as the “master” whereas all others are set to “slave”. All sensors of the network  must be configured to the same radio channel. See the Research Toolkit user manual for more information about how to change the Physilog configuration.


Gait variability is not computed.

Computing variability on a very low number of cycles is not meaningful. Gait Up Software thus provides variability only when there are more than 10 forward cycles.


Symmetry is not computed.

To compute symmetry, data from Physilog sensors on both feet are needed.


How can I update the internal time of my sensors to show the correct date?

There are two ways of updating the internal time of Physilog® 5, via computer and via mobile application. Details are available in the user manual for Physilog® 5(sect. 5.3, p.9).

Via computer:
Create a new text file on the Desktop of your computer or directly on the Physilog® sensor (on Windows: right click, new>text file, on Mac: open text editor and save file as text file)
Leave it empty and rename it to TIME (complete name with file extension: TIME.txt)
Copy-paste the file to the Physilog® if you saved it on the Desktop
Disconnect the Physilog® from the computer to update the time and date to the hour when the file has been created
